Ex- Safety Arrested For Allegedly Murdering His Wife

Yet another player on the 2007 Florida Gators team has been embroiled in a murder investigation.

Former Florida Gators safety Tony Joiner found himself in handcuffs on Saturday and charged with second-degree murder for the killing of his wife in 2016, according to the News-Press.

The death of Heyzel Obando had remained an unsolved case for three years when she met her untimely demise on on Valentine’s Day in 2016. Obando’s death had been ruled a homicide two months after her body was recovered.

News-Press uncovered court records that show Joiner had been arrested twice for beating Obando.

The mother of a Fort Myers woman who was killed had this to say to News-Press:

“As a mother, I understand the pain his mother is going through,” Isabel Martinez said. “But as a mother, no one is going to take my pain away.

“Now that he is arrested, I hope he feels the weight of the law.”

Joiner played safety at Florida from 2004-07 and is now the second player from Urban Meyer’s 2007 Florida squad to be arrested and charged with murder, joining former Gators tight end Aaron Hernandez.

Isabel Martinez was granted permanent guardianship of Obando’s two daughters, ages 3 and 6.
